The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures

American weights and measures are based off units used in Britain prior to 1826 at the time the imperial system officially introduced. From 1960 to 1963 American and British length measures differed in two Parts per Million. The middle of the 20th century, it began causing problems and the governments of both nations agreed to refine the measures to exactly match. Since then, Great Britain and the United States were using the same length measures. Within the U.S. the old standard of foot was maintained with the designation US survey foot.

From 1995 in 1995, the UK began using metric units in general usage. The only imperial measure of length that can be officially recognized are miles yards, feet, yards and inches for road traffic signs.

British Imperial Measure prior to 1963

It was the first time that English official measurement standards were defined in 15th century. British system of units, known as imperial units was introduced in 1824. This was when the British Weights and Meausurements Act of 1824 repealed the entire British legislation on measures and redefined existing units. It was 1963. Weights and Measures Act standartized international measures.

International Nautical Measure

The International Nautical Mile was defined by First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. This is the only definition currently used in the majority of countries and is the one accepted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Prior to 1929, various nations had their own definitions, in addition, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately accept the value of international standards.

• 17th Conference The 17th Conference defined"the meter" as 1/299,792,458 of how far light travels in a vacuum within a single second, and this meter definition is actual to this day.
